Common Offside Questions

Which body parts are used to judge offside?

The head, body, and feet are used to judge offside. Arms are excluded. A player can be offside based on a shoulder being beyond the second-last defender, but a hand or arm ahead of the defender does not create an offside position.

Can a player be offside from a corner kick?

No. A player cannot be in an offside position from a corner kick, goal kick, or throw-in. Offside applies only to passes in open play from team-mates.

Is being in an offside position an automatic offence?

No. Being in an offside position is not an offence in itself. A player is only penalised when they become involved in active play from that position — receiving the ball, challenging for it, or clearly impeding an opponent.
